The unit originally was constituted the 1298th Military Police Company, Aviation and was recognized during WWII for service in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe from 1943 - 1945.

Redesignated as the 218th Military Police Company, the unit was reactivated 10 December 1965 at Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and returned to CONUS on 19 September 1966 for formal preparation for overseas training for expected movement to Vietnam. On 28 December 1966 the unit departed for Cam Ranh Bay, Republic of Vietnam aboard the USNS Darby. On 18 January 1967 the 218th Military Police Company arrived at Cam Ranh Bay and was assigned to the 97th Military Police Battalion, under the 18th Military Police Brigade initially providing Military Police support at Cam Ranh Bay, Phan Rang, Dalat and Ban Me Thuot. At the outbreak of the 1968 Tet Offensive, initially a platoon of the 218th Military Police Company were moved to Nha Trang in support of the 504th MP Bn. and the 272nd MP Co., subsequently additional members of the 218th were assigned there although officially the unit was not relocated to Nha Trang until 17 March 1968. Some members of the 218th remained in Cam Ranh Bay and at various times the 218th had detachments in Vung Ro Bay, Tuy Hoa, Ban Me Thuot, Khanh Duong, and Duc Ky. From January to April 1971 one platoon deployed to Quang Tri in support of Operation Lam Son 719 and operated between Quang Tri, Dong Ha and Khe Sanh. The 218th Military Police Company's various missions included military police law enforcement; convoy escort; security of military ports and logistical supply facilities; VIP escort and security; operating from gun jeeps, V-100 armored vehicles, small patrol boats and at times from helicopters.

General Order #55, Headquarters, Department of the Army, dated 11 October 1968 awarded the 218th Military Police Company the Meritorious Unit Commendation for exceptionally meritorious achievement in the performance of outstanding service during the period 1 May 1967 to 30 April 1968.

General Order #6, Headquarters, Department of the Army, dated 25 February 1974 awarded the 218th Military Police Company the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm for valorous combat achievement during the period 1 March to 9 October 1971.

The 218th Military Police Company was deactivated on 17 April 1972 in Vietnam. The unit has since been reactivated for duty in Iraq.
